Point-of-Sale Software

Accuracy
Accurate pricing is extraordinarily difficult in antiquated stores that use only a cash register and a pricing gun. Every now and then, you may find that an employee failed to change the price on the pricing gun and marked several items significantly higher or lower than intended. This can cause confusion or significant revenue loss at the cash register. On the other hand, with proper POS software like that offered by companies such as Shopify, you can allow your system to read UPC codes. This will make your products less susceptible to human error. If the system has not been updated, you can quickly revise prices in a matter of seconds by changing the amount associated with a UPC code rather than replacing tags on dozens or hundreds of items.

 Loss Prevention

Every business experiences loss for one reason or another. It’s an unfortunate truth in every industry. Oftentimes the loss is unintentional and stems from items that were, for example, accidentally broken by an employee or customer. In the food industry, this unintentional loss can be due to an ingredient meeting its “use by” date and needing to be thrown away. Sometimes this loss is directly due to malicious acts, such as theft by a customer or an employee. In retail businesses, it is simple to add certain hardware, such as fingerprint scanners, PIN numbers, or swipe cards for cashiers that allow your POS software to monitor what items were sold, when, and by whom. This allows your employees to know that they are being held accountable for what is being sold and that it is being sold at the correct price as well as being held accountable for what is in there till the end of their shift.

Inventory Management
Many POS systems come with comprehensive inventory management software that can track several items relating to your inventory. Often it will compile data over the years regarding pricing, sales, and trends so that your business can analyze what is needed and when. Your inventory management system can also be set up to alert you when certain products are running low so that you can decide what needs to be re-ordered and how much of each product you will need, keeping items constantly on your shelf. You can also use it to check which items aren’t selling enough and decide what the best course of action to take is. There are times where it’s simply a matter of your customer not knowing about the product, allowing you to put a promotion on it and, after the promotion has ended, determine if sales rise at all. If they begin to rise, that’s great. If you look into your inventory later on down the road, and even then the product is still a low-seller then you can put it on an end-cap at a reduced price and clear the shelf space for something that will sell.

By updating your cash registers to an advanced POS system or getting updated, scalable software for your current POS system, you will be able to easily analyze various data points for your business. This will allow you to save a significant amount of money, reduce inventory-related labor, and decrease loss prevention significantly.
