The Croods and Epic arrived in 2013 with two very different animated worlds built around adventure, family and unfamiliar landscapes. DreamWorks Animation's The Croods follows a prehistoric family forced out of the cave that once protected them, sending them across a world filled with strange creatures and new possibilities. Epic, directed by Chris Wedge, shifts the scale to a hidden forest conflict where a teenager joins a group of tiny characters trying to protect their world. Their stories differ, but both productions show how character silhouettes, colour and environmental design can quickly establish personality and stakes before a scene even unfolds.
